Tinned Tuna

Featured Replies

I hate to admit how long I've been here not knowing this question.

Seems like basically two brands of tuna: nautilus and sealect

Seems like big c might Only stock Sealect

Anyway, I'm here to complain about the quality of the tuna steak. It used to be firm and the water clear. Now, for as long as I can remember water always has tiny bits of tuna floating around in it and tuna doesn't look especially prime

I'm wondering if it's on rotation and the good fresh stuff goes overseas and we the get the crap that's left over? Of course the tens are printed in Thai generally so that theory doesn't entirely hold water

Is one brand better than another? is by the tuna steak highest grade either in olive oil or in spring water.

... recommendation would be great I'm lost on this sketchy tuna

Go to Makro  and you'll see there are many options for tinned tuna.

short version ...

long version ...

I used to love the Fanny Tuna when I was working in Peru.

Back in the day.

Yeah, big difference...got it but I swear it used to be far better and not a lot of bits floating about the tin

There are different options, like Tuna steak, Tuna chunks and Sandwich tuna.

Next all 3 options are available in spring water or brine.

The only solid one is the tuna steak option, chunks will have some smaller particles next to the chunks, and sandwich tuna are obviously all small cut up pieces

Our household goes through a lot of tuna.

Definitely the best is Sealect Tuna Steak in Sunflower Oil (or your choice of liquid). Big meaty chunks, hardly any small flakes.

I recently tried Aro brand Tuna Chunks in Sunflower Oil but they were a disappointment, very flakey small pieces.

Can't believe my life has come to this - discussing cans of tuna with strangers on the internet....

Haha

All good. It's really truly been a mystery for me for years. The quality just seems to be getting so bad like I'm buying sandwich level tuna in premium can

Yeah I got you there. Issue is the steak seems like a mix of chunk and sandwich grade

BigC where I live (Buriram) has both Nautilus & Sealect brands. I normally buy either brand of Tuna Chunks in springwater and have never noticed what you describe.

Because it's chunks and already messy unlike the steak

Oops sorry, I made a mistake in my original post. It's tuna steak that I buy not tuna chunks.

Canned tuna in the US went to the dogs decades ago.  Buy a can of tuna in the States and you get shredded garbage even if is says is "chunks."

I've been VERY impressed with the tuna quality here in Thailand.  Even cans of tuna that ARE NOT labelled as tuna steak are often solid chunks of tuna steak. I usually buy Nautilus as its great value for the price.  My last purchase was Nautilus chunked tuna in Spring Water.  When I opened it, it was 1 solid chunk of tuna steak.  That's not unusual.

Now regarding Sealect Fitt.  Imho that is the worst tuna that I've bought in Thailand.  It was rather shredded and it tasted terrible.  I don't know how a food processor can mess up the taste of canned tuna, but I can't eat it.  I gave that batch to my cat and dogs. I'll never purchase it again, however, YMMV.

Nautilus packed in Spring Water!    A-Number-1!  It's my number 1 choice.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but look into the mercury levels of all canned tuna. I've heard it recommended eating it more than once or twice a month can raise your levels measurably.

Gotta die of something

It wont be from stuffing my face with tuna, hopefully from suffocation of tuna on my face
