A former healthcare worker and four accomplices in northern Vietnam face allegations of orchestrating a shocking insurance fraud scheme involving the intentional breaking of clients' bones. Police in Phu Tho Province detained Ta Minh Chau, a former employee of Cam Khe District Medical Center, along with Hoang Van Truong, Hoang Van Thang, Hoang Thi Hong Diep, and Nguyen Anh Dung. The accused reportedly used anesthetics and hammers to stage fake accidents, defrauding insurance firms of over VND6 billion (US$240,000).

Chau allegedly utilized his medical knowledge to manipulate life-insurance compensation processes, specifically targeting bone fractures known for high payouts. The scheme was comprehensive, involving the purchase of insurance policies and the falsification of medical records. By administering anesthetics and crafting accident scenes—like electric shocks—the group aimed to convincingly mimic real injuries for insurance claims.

Major life insurance companies including Manulife, AIA, Dai-ichi Life, FWD, Sun Life, and Chubb Life were victims, with Manulife alone losing VND2.6 billion. Phu Tho police criticized the operation as "organized and highly sophisticated," with methods designed to bypass law enforcement scrutiny. The group’s actions were condemned as "cruel and inhumane," particularly for their reckless disregard for participants' health.

Going forward, the suspects are under investigation for property appropriation, with potential legal repercussions looming. Authorities are likely to delve deeper into the network’s operations to prevent similar future schemes. The incident highlights a critical need for tighter regulatory measures in the insurance industry to safeguard against sophisticated fraud tactics, reported VN Express.
