A family of three, a 34-year-old man, a 34-year-old woman and their seven-year-old daughter, died after their motorcycle crashed into the rear of a six-wheel truck in Chiang Kham district, Phayao, on the evening of 17 November 2025. The collision occurred around 18:30 on the access road to a rice mill in Nam Waen, where emergency responders found the motorcycle destroyed and all three victims trapped beneath its wreckage. Police, forensic doctors from Chiang Kham Hospital and rescue workers from Siam Ruamjai Foundation attended the scene and confirmed the fatalities.

Initial reports stated that the family had been riding home after purchasing fuel in their village when rain began to fall, leaving the road slippery and visibility poor. As they travelled along the darkened road, they approached the rice mill exit where the truck, driven by  Mr. Wichit from Ang Thong, Chiang Kham, was pulling out after delivering a load of paddy. The family’s motorcycle struck the rear of the truck with force, causing their instantaneous deaths.

According to Mr. Wichit, he had just left the mill after unloading the paddy and was slowly turning left out of the junction when he heard a loud impact at the rear of his vehicle. He told officers he stopped immediately to check, discovering the motorcycle lodged beneath the truck and the three victims already deceased. He remained at the scene to provide his account to investigators.

Local leaders familiar with the family confirmed that the victims had set out only briefly to buy fuel and were returning home when the storm began, reducing visibility along the rural stretch. The combination of slippery road conditions, darkness and the truck’s manoeuvre at the junction is believed to have contributed to the crash. Police emphasised that these initial accounts will form part of a broader investigation into the exact cause.

Naewna reported that officers from Chiang Kham Police Station will continue gathering statements, reviewing lighting conditions and examining the mechanics of the motorcycle and truck involved. Forensic evidence and eyewitness inputs are expected to help determine whether additional factors, such as speed or road design, played a role. Authorities will release details of any possible charges, once the investigation is completed.

This so sad  but 3 people on a motorbike in the rain incuding  a child is a recipe for disaster

  • 2 weeks later...

They must have been going fast for the deceleration force of hitting the truck to have killed all three of them instantly. I assume no helmets as well. Sounds like a very avoidable accident.
