Severe flooding in central Vietnam has resulted in 41 deaths and left 9 people missing, with Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa provinces suffering the most casualties. The intense weather has damaged 167 homes and inundated over 52,000 others, while over 13,000 hectares of crops and significant livestock were lost. The disaster has also caused significant disruptions, including landslides blocking major highways and halting railway services, with Tuy Hoa Airport suspending operations.

Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Gia Lai, Hue, and Da Nang reported casualties, as officials scramble for emergency response and relief efforts. Railways have ceased operations for 14 passenger trains, and disruptions on several national highways are ongoing due to over 30 landslides. More than one million customers lost power, though 615,000 have since been reconnected.

The Ministry of National Defense has mobilized personnel, vehicles, and helicopters to support rescue efforts, while Dak Lak and Lam Dong have requested substantial support from national reserves. Rainfall over recent days has reached peaks in some areas, with levels on the Ba River in Dak Lak and Dinh Ninh Hoa River in Khanh Hoa exceeding historic flood levels. Although rainfall has eased, forecasts predict significant continued precipitation in the coming days.

Dr. Truong Ba Kien explained that the flooding resulted from concurrent intense weather systems, including a stronger-than-usual cold surge. East winds and warm sea temperatures have intensified rainfall, with a rare northward shift of an equatorial cloud band adding to the deluge. Kien highlighted the role of climate change in warming the atmosphere and oceans, increasing the frequency and severity of such extreme weather events.

Looking forward, authorities and residents brace for more rain, with the meteorological agency predicting substantial precipitation through the weekend. Recovery and relief efforts continue to be prioritized, with substantial aid requests from affected provinces. The situation remains monitored closely, as areas like Lam Dong declare emergencies and appeal for external assistance, reported VN Express.
