A 32-year-old woman from Loei has lost 950,000 baht after being duped by scammers posing as recruitment agents and consular officials, forcing her to sell 11 baht-weight of gold and drain her savings. The victim, Ms Ploychompoo of Kok Du Subdistrict in Mueang Loei District, reported the case on 21 November 2025 after realising she had been deceived while trying to secure work in Canada. The financial losses left her without savings, prompting her to warn others not to fall for similar schemes.

Ms Ploychompoo, a sales assistant at a school cooperative, explained that the scam began on 17 November 2025 when she searched Facebook for opportunities to work in Canada. She found a seemingly credible recruitment page with more than 8,000 followers and contacted it for information. The page administrator claimed that a “Department of Consular Affairs officer” would follow up, and she later received a Line message from someone using that identity.

The individual requested personal documents, bank book details and a 300,000-baht transfer, claiming it was needed to verify that her funds belonged to her. The scammer promised the money would be refunded after verification but then asserted that a transfer issue had occurred. Ms Ploychompoo was asked to transfer 150,000 baht twice to obtain an OTP code and unlock the account, but no refund followed.

The next day, she was told to transfer a further 300,000 baht. With no cash left, she sold 11 baht-weight of gold to raise the amount and sent it, yet the scammer insisted more money was still needed. She then borrowed 50,000 baht from a friend and transferred it, only realising the fraud when her husband became aware and raised concerns.

On 19 November 2025, Ms Ploychompoo filed a complaint with Mueang Loei Police Station and asked her bank to freeze the accounts involved. Despite this, the scammer continued to call, demanding more money to “unlock” the funds, while avoiding her questions about visiting the Department of Consular Affairs in person. Each transfer had been made to different account names and different banks, consistent with mule-account operations.

Naewna reported that Ms Ploychompoo said she is devastated, noting that the lost savings and gold were intended to support her child’s education and her family. She urged police to quickly identify and prosecute the perpetrators and to recover her money. She also expressed hope that her case would alert others to be vigilant against such fraud.
