EV Charger Blast Damages Car at Bangkok Station

A Bangkok EV repair shop has reported an incident in which a customer’s electric vehicle was damaged after a charging cabinet exploded at a petrol station in the On Nut area. The blast caused the charging head to fly off, burned the vehicle’s charging port and destroyed the Battery Control Unit (BCU), though the driver’s wife, who was sitting inside the car at the time, was unharmed. The owner of the charging unit has agreed to cover the full repair cost.

The incident was detailed on 21 November by the Facebook page “กิ้งกือ EV Shop,” which posted photos and a first-hand account from the shop owner. He said he initially thought the customer was joking when he called to say the charging cabinet had exploded, only to find the vehicle blackened on arrival. The customer reported that charging had first cut off and when he reconnected the plug, a loud explosion occurred within two minutes, sending the charging head flying to the ground.

Upon inspection, technicians found burn marks at the charging socket and the car could not move because the high-voltage system was no longer supplying power. The repair team removed the battery pack for examination and found no cell or CSC damage, which they described as fortunate given the potential cost of module replacement. A blown high-voltage fuse was discovered and replaced, but the vehicle still failed to enter Ready mode.

Further checks confirmed that the BCU had failed due to a power surge. Attempts to repair the power supply circuitry were unsuccessful, requiring a full replacement of the unit. The charging port was also found to have melted components that needed to be changed. After all parts were replaced, the vehicle was restored to normal function.

The Daily News reported that the shop stated that the charging station operator accepted responsibility and paid the entire repair bill on behalf of the car owner. The case has drawn significant attention online due to the unusual nature of a charging cabinet explosion and its potential safety implications for EV users.

Key Takeaways

• An EV charging cabinet exploded at an On Nut petrol station, damaging a customer’s vehicle but causing no injuries.

• Repairs revealed a blown high-voltage fuse, a destroyed BCU, and a melted charging port, requiring multiple component replacements.

• The charging station operator agreed to cover all repair costs following the incident.

This is a losing battle amongst the hardcore EV fans in AN. But i think this happens way to often for a vehicle. Ev's are dangerous, plain and simple. So much power sent to them for the charging of batteries that can explode and total a car if that happens. Ths woman inside this car was very lucky to have escaped uninjured. When an Ev catches fire, it can not be put out and engulfs the car.

I am happy I stick with my dinosaur fuel burner.

"way too often" ... :cheesy:

Minor oops, and only issue, car down while being repaired ... along with, "The owner of the charging unit has agreed to cover the full repair cost."

Sh!t happens in life, deal with it.  Only proves the built in safety features work as designed.

Nothing to see here, move along :coffee1:

Wonder what the results would be if a short circuit happened at the petrol pump, big spark and it caught fire, what the end result might be :w00t:
