86 Airlines Apply for Thailand Flight Slots in 2026

Eighty-six airlines have applied for more than 270,000 flight slots to and from Thailand for Summer 2026. This announcement was made by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) after discussions at the 157th Slot Conference in Lisbon. Notably, Thailand has also been chosen to host the 158th Slot Conference in Bangkok in June 2026.

 

During the Lisbon event, CAAT engaged with 86 of the 146 participating airlines to negotiate flight slots as they plan routes to Thailand. The Summer 2026 schedule includes 543,738 available slots for 271,869 flights across both Level 3 (congested airports like Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang) and Level 2 airports (like U-Tapao). This allocation features 308,572 slots for international flights and 235,166 for domestic.

 

A diverse range of carriers, including European, Middle Eastern, American, African, and Asia-Pacific airlines, have sought these slots. Notable applicants include Air France, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, United Airlines, Kenya Airways, and Thai Airways, among others. Additionally, new or expanding carriers like South African Airways and Beond are marking their interest in connecting with Thailand.

 

The CAAT has approved new key routes such as Thai Airways' Jaipur–Suvarnabhumi, South African Airways' Johannesburg–Guangzhou, and Gulf Air's Bahrain–Phuket, enhancing travel options. Reactions from industry experts highlight the strategic significance of these negotiations for Thailand's aviation sector, potentially boosting tourism and business travel.

 

Looking ahead, the hosting of the next Slot Conference in Bangkok will position Thailand as a central hub in global aviation discussions. The CAAT's participation alongside regional coordination efforts, such as the Asia/Pacific Coordinators Association meeting, reflects Thailand's growing influence in aviation planning and cooperation, reported The Nation.

Very good question.

I'm trying to get my head around how these slot allocations get juggled together to come up with a coherent schedule that "works" all around the world.  Likely a computer program of course, but still amazes me.

A few months ago, we were told that Suvarnabhumi alone handles 113 airlines - so what happened to the other 27 carriers? There aren't nearly that many purely domestic airline companies, so that wouldn't seem to explain the difference. Does anyone know?

Did you notice that all those airports listed in the article, although they host less airlines than BKK, but all have more annual passengers, more daily flights and cover more destinations.

A slot conference ? ..sitting around talking about slots all day, all the different kinds of slots ....and how much you pay for slots ...

Such a large airport, 270,000 slots, and all that with just two runways.
NB: In the Netherlands, they already have five, and that's for such a small country.

With deceasing tourist numbers visiting Thailand, will these slots be commerciably viable?

 

I wonder if Ryanair will apply?  It would certainly prevent all those backpackers and cheapskates from boarding with oversized baggage and blocking aisles during boarding, that one consistently sees in Thailand.

So why not look at other Thai airports that could easily take on new flights ? Rather than flying into Bangkok . I am hoping that The newly extended Buriram International Airport will soon declare that they will be hosting new  European departing  flights which would be very popular with the Issan farangs  . Also look at improving provincial flights , so that you don't start or finish your flight in Bangkok .

Hopefully non stop JFK-BKK will return…

Of course they can. Have you already forgotten? They are, or will become, the airport hub of all Asia. Or maybe not….........

Third runway opened about a year ago.
