A Libyan woman was arrested in Chiang Rai, Thailand, for overstaying her visa by 897 days. The arrest took place on November 21 at a dormitory in the Rob Wiang sub-district. She had been causing disturbances for neighbors, leading to complaints and subsequent police action.

The woman's visa had expired on June 7, 2022. Complaints from building residents initiated the investigation. Tourist Police coordinated with management to verify residency, confirming her stay and leading to surveillance prior to the arrest.

Upon her exit from the dorm, officers approached her for questioning. Her passport confirmed the overstay, prompting immediate custody and initiation of legal proceedings. Authorities are coordinating deportation efforts.

Under Thai law, the woman faces potential penalties, including a prison term of up to two years and a fine of up to 20,000 baht. This case highlights a rise in visa overstay incidents in the region, reflecting broader immigration challenges.

In related events, an Austrian man was detained in Phuket for using falsified documents and overstaying by 578 days. Similarly, last week, a Chinese national was arrested in Pattaya for illegal work and a visa overstay of nearly three years.

Looking forward, authorities are likely to increase enforcement efforts to address the ongoing issue of visa overstays. This may lead to more rigorous checks and monitoring of foreign nationals to curb such incidents, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A Libyan woman overstayed her Thai visa by over two and a half years.
  • Arrests for visa overstays in Thailand are on the rise.
  • Authorities may strengthen immigration enforcement measures.

How stupid can you be. Knowing you are an illegal in the country. Then making a nuisance so bad that neighbors file a complaint against you to be investigated. Was she actually trying to be caught?

I bet she regrets that now...

Not at all ! I got the Non O Retirement Visa since 2023 😉

The usual MO for these types of long overstayers is that they get complacent and start attracting far too much attention to themselves, as they think nothing can stop them.... happens time and again.

Eventually, even those who stay quietly under the radar get found as sooner or later something happens/they be reckless and the reckoning comes... snitches everywhere too as the Thais have no scruples about not reporting someone, especially a foreigner. I bet I have been snitched on multiple times over the last 25 years, but because I'm legit and go to great lengths to be so... nothing happens. They know who is where and what folks are doing, just tkes a little longer before the bill shows up in touristy places... outside such places, then you get scooped up fast.

Why?  I thought the procedure was to lock them up in IDC until they sort out their own flight "home".
