Việt Nam has faced a turbulent start to 2025, with severe storms, floods, and landslides resulting in 409 fatalities or missing persons and 727 injuries. The extreme weather has also damaged over 337,000 homes and left 553,417 hectares of rice and crops devastated. The economic toll from these disasters is a staggering VNĐ85.099 trillion (US$3.2 billion), marking a significant increase from the VNĐ3.9 trillion recorded the previous year.

Since the start of 2025, Việt Nam has experienced 19 storms and tropical depressions in its waters, only one short of the 2017 record. Expert Nguyễn Tôn Quân warns of potential increases, as a new system near the Philippines might become the year's 15th storm. The country's northern and central regions have been particularly hard-hit, with crucial infrastructure suffering amidst repeated storms and floods.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment plans to enhance forecasting by expanding rainfall monitoring, refining heavy-rain predictions, and creating detailed hazard maps. They also aim to relocate at-risk communities, adjust farming methods, and upgrade critical infrastructure like dykes and reservoirs. International cooperation and digital technologies will be leveraged for better real-time monitoring, with authorities seeking global support for rebuilding.

Dr Cao Đức Phát emphasizes that despite improvements in forecasting, more unpredictable weather patterns are challenging current systems. Region-specific flood-risk simulations and real-time response tools are necessary to manage these escalating disasters. Local initiatives, such as those in Quảng Ngãi, provide innovative models for other areas to adapt and refine, reported Vietnam News.

Key Takeaways

  • Severe weather in 2025 has led to significant human and economic losses in Việt Nam.
  • Authorities focus on improving forecasting and infrastructure resilience.
  • New systems and international cooperation are crucial for future preparedness.
