The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has initiated the e-bidding process for the expansion of its Red Line commuter rail. This involves two major projects: the Dark Red Line extension from Rangsit to Thammasat University Rangsit Campus and the Light Red Line from Siriraj to Salaya. The combined bidding price is set at 20.79 billion baht, with the Dark Red Line at 6.06 billion baht and the Light Red Line at 14.72 billion baht.

These tender documents, released yesterday, will be available until December 28, with submissions due by December 29. Contract signing is anticipated by February next year, and work is expected to begin by March, aiming for completion in early 2029. The Dark Red Line extension, approved by the cabinet on January 7, is an 8.84-kilometre section requiring land expropriation, expected to be decreed by early 2026.

The Light Red Line expansion, sanctioned on June 17, consolidates former segments into a 20.5-kilometre contract. This project will involve elevated and at-grade sections over nine new stations, utilizing existing SRT land, avoiding the need for expropriations. According to Anan Phonimdaeng, acting SRT governor, the expansion includes key stations such as Siriraj Hospital and Taling Chan Floating Market.

Expert analysis suggests that these extensions will significantly enhance commuter connectivity and reduce travel times in the Bangkok metropolitan area. The projects are likely to increase access to educational institutions and hospitals, improving the quality of life for many residents.

Looking forward, the SRT plans a detailed monitoring process to ensure timely progress and adherence to budget constraints. The expansions are poised to meet the growing transportation needs of the area, given the region's rapid urban growth. The success of these projects may pave the way for additional infrastructure developments across Thailand, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Two major Red Line rail expansions have entered the e-bidding phase.
  • Expected completion is slated for early 2029 after construction begins in March.
