Photos of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas with scam suspect Benjamin Mauerberger, known as Ben Smith, went viral shortly after a press briefing on a crackdown against major scam networks. This has led to public criticism and calls for explanations from both officials.

People's Party MPs questioned the government's commitment to fighting scam networks, with Rangsiman Rome expressing doubts about Smith's perceived untouchability. Rome also urged Anutin to dismiss Deputy Prime Minister Thammanat Prompao due to alleged ties with Smith.

Thailand's Cybercrime Investigation Bureau is pursuing warrants for over 40 individuals linked to transnational scams. Anutin clarified that his photo with Smith was from a casual meeting in 2014, denying any personal connection. Ekniti stated he met Smith at a Royal Thai Police event years ago and has had no further contact, reported Thai PBS.

Key Takeaways

  • Photos of officials with scam suspect raised questions about their crackdown efforts.
  • Anutin and Ekniti denied ongoing relationships with suspect Ben Smith.
  • Cybercrime authorities are seeking warrants for over 40 suspected scam network members.

Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul acknowledged knowing Ben Smith, but clarified he is not close to him after a photo of them together went viral. The photo also featured prominent figures such as General Apirat Kongsompong and CEO Sarath Ratanavadi, among others.

The image surfaced a day after Anutin announced a major crackdown on Thai networks linked to Cambodian-based scam syndicates. He explained the picture was taken in Singapore around a decade ago at a social event, adding that his interactions with Smith were limited to a few such gatherings.

When questioned about the release’s motives, Anutin hinted at political motivations but did not elaborate. He noted his prior decision not to approve Smith's Thai citizenship application, addressing speculation about Smith's influence.

Police reported the detention of 29 out of 42 suspects connected to these scam networks. They face charges including criminal association and money laundering, with assets totaling 10 billion baht impounded by the Anti-Money Laundering Office, reported Thai PBS.

Key Takeaways

  • PM Anutin explains limited connections with scam suspect Ben Smith.
  • The viral photo followed a significant crackdown announcement.
  • Authorities detained 29 suspects and seized substantial assets.

On the pic it is clearly Mr Anutin. he can deny it but look at the pic/ Maybe  they should do a face scan so they are sure.. and if so..... exit.. It is very unlikely that the scammer started recently

Arms around shoulders. Ben Smith looks happy with the movers and shakers in Thai society, perhaps they had a very 'productive' meeting.
