An early morning fire swept through the Ton Satu community in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya on 4 December, destroying two adjoining houses and killing 24 cats trapped in cages. The blaze broke out around 03:00 at Moo 3, Khlong Suan Phlu, prompting a large emergency response after residents reported flames rapidly engulfing a wooden home. A 65-year-old woman managed to rescue her 82-year-old mother, but efforts to save the caged animals failed as the fire intensified.

Police investigators said the narrow lanes in the community prevented fire engines from reaching the burning structures, forcing crews from Ayothaya Municipality and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Municipality to drag hoses deep into the area. Firefighters battled the blaze for about an hour before bringing it under control. Initial inspections confirmed the loss of two houses and a damaged motorcycle, along with the discovery of the cats’ remains.

According to resident Juthamas, 65, she lived with her elderly mother and her younger sister, who has a psychiatric condition. She said the fire originated in her sister’s separate room and that she was alerted when her sister shouted that the house was burning. She reported that her sister often burned mosquito coils while sleeping, which she believed might have triggered the blaze.

Authorities cordoned off the area pending a full forensic examination by the Ayutthaya Provincial Police Forensics Division. Officers recorded the scene and removed evidence to support the investigation. Police will determine whether the fire was accidental or linked to unsafe use of mosquito coils, as suggested by the family.

Daily News reported that officials said further inquiries are now underway to establish the exact cause of ignition and assess legal responsibilities. Support services are expected to engage with the affected family as the investigation proceeds. Findings will guide any formal action once forensic results are complete.
