Thai and Vietnamese naval forces have reaffirmed their growing security partnership, strengthening joint mechanisms to address rising maritime threats across Southeast Asia. The announcement by a Navy spokesman underscored the immediate regional significance of closer coordination, particularly as countries face increasingly complex challenges at sea. Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaipan, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy, confirmed the continuing commitment to cooperation that directly supports maritime stability.

The two countries have built their naval ties over several decades, leading to regular exchanges and operational collaboration between senior commanders. Their partnership includes joint maritime security dialogues, practical operational coordination, and routine contact across command levels. These sustained efforts have contributed to a trusted bilateral relationship with consistently expanding capabilities.

Key elements of the cooperation include the annual joint patrols along the maritime boundary known as the KC Line, held twice a year to improve communication and strengthen trust. The navies also conduct PASSEX naval training and SAREX search-and-rescue exercises, designed to improve joint readiness in emergencies and sensitive maritime incidents. After each exercise cycle, naval vessels from both sides undertake reciprocal port visits to reinforce professional relations and enable personnel exchanges.

Most recently, Vietnam deployed naval vessels numbered 264 and 265 to Thailand between 27 and 30 November, docking at Sattahip Naval Base. These visits further provided opportunities for sharing expertise, maritime practices and strengthening mutual understanding. The continued rotation of port calls has been instrumental in maintaining close operational familiarity between the two forces.

Both navies acknowledge the shifting security landscape in Southeast Asia, with concerns including maritime disputes, sovereignty violations, illegal activities, transnational crime and emerging maritime threats. Officials emphasised their shared determination to enhance readiness and coordination mechanisms to respond effectively to any developments that may compromise regional stability. This approach reflects a proactive stance toward safeguarding the region’s maritime domain.

Matichon reported that ongoing cooperation demonstrates the significant role both navies play in maintaining safety, order and stability across regional waters. Their efforts aim to ensure that frameworks for collaboration evolve in line with current and future maritime security challenges facing both Thailand and Vietnam. Authorities indicated that joint initiatives would continue to expand to meet emerging needs and strengthen collective resilience.

Key Takeaways

• Thailand and Vietnam are expanding naval cooperation to address evolving maritime threats.
