A security guard was killed instantly on the morning of 9 December 2025 when a heavy steel gate at a factory in Bang Pla, Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan, collapsed onto him. Police and rescue workers arrived to find the victim, 56-year-old Mr Wanna Yongyut, lying on his back in a pool of blood at the factory entrance with a large fallen steel gate on him. Initial examinations revealed severe head injuries and signs of a broken neck, leaving no chance of survival.

The incident occurred as trucks were entering and leaving the factory, with the victim carrying out his routine task of sliding the gate closed. According to his colleague, Mr Khiew, the gate collapsed after a thin steel sheet, recently welded by a contractor to cover a gap, snapped off, causing the entire structure to fall. He said he tried to lift the gate but could not do so due to its weight, prompting him to call for help and notify the 1669 emergency hotline, though attempts to save the victim failed.

Police found that the steel gate had been installed only two months earlier and was still under warranty. Early investigations suggest the contractor used an unsuitable thin metal sheet for the welded section, leaving it unable to support the gate’s weight and leading to the fatal incident. Officers are gathering further details to determine responsibility for poor installation and possible negligence.

The factory owner has stated it will summon the contractor to proceed with required steps and will assist the victim’s family on humanitarian grounds. Compensation procedures through the security company employing the victim will also be followed. Investigators will call in witnesses, company representatives and the contractor for questioning at Bang Phli Police Station as part of legal proceedings.

Crikey, I always found warranty in Thailand ends the instant you hand over the final cash payment

Utter nonsense.

These gates incidents are far too common, mostly at construction sites. However, it's not unusual for a heavy mooban gate to squash grandma or the kids.

This is gross negligence manslaughter.  Reminds me of the sad collapse of the State Building under construction in Bangkok.

Happened to my neighbor lady.  I got her out.  She only had a few scratches.  I checked the gate.  The safety catch was only inches long.  I told her son to contact the Co.  to correct it.  They come the next day.  The son followed my specs and told the Co. to do it right.
