Thailand's Public Health Ministry reports that screenings of 130,605 evacuees from conflict zones have identified 1,127 individuals experiencing high stress, with 156 assessed as at risk of self-harm. This assessment, announced on December 15, 2025, highlights mental health challenges faced by those displaced due to Thai-Cambodian border clashes.

Caretaker Public Health Minister Patana Promphat and Dr. Ekkachai Piansriwatchara revealed the findings following a meeting at the Emergency Medical and Public Health Services Centre. With evacuee numbers increasing, the ministry is deploying rotating teams to offer continuous care in the affected regions.

Assessments indicated that about 1% of evacuees are under significant stress, necessitating the involvement of Mental Health Crisis Assessment and Treatment Teams (MCATTs). Those at risk of self-harm are being referred to mental health professionals for further support and monitoring.

The ministry also evaluated stress levels among 4,675 medical personnel in border provinces, uncovering high stress in 78 individuals. To mitigate this, MCATTs are offering counseling; additional staffing and flexible work schedules are being implemented to alleviate stress due to workload and security issues.

To address general wellbeing, the ministry plans to enhance disease prevention measures at evacuation shelters, tackling potential outbreaks such as diarrhoea. Evacuees are encouraged to engage in stress-reduction activities and are advised to connect with health volunteers or MCATT staff for support, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Approximately 1% of evacuees are highly stressed, with 156 at self-harm risk.
  • Health personnel stressed due to workload; support measures are in place.
  • Disease prevention and stress-reduction activities are prioritized at shelters.
