Trillions owed: US debt to other countries hits new highs

Featured Replies

While it’s unlikely the United States government would ever default on its debt to other countries, there are several nations and territories that hold substantial amounts of US dollars and would be seriously affected if Trump’s administration chose to not repay them. As of March 2025, the US national debt stood at roughly $36.6 trillion dollars according to Peter G. Peterson Foundation, and while much of the debt is owed to US citizens,  a large portion is also owed to other countries.

Up to Dec 2024 the US owes the following countries:

Germany-  $97 billion

South Korea- $125 billion

Mexico- $103 billion

Saudi Arabia -$138 billion

Norway- $158 billion

Brazil- $202 billion

India- $219 billion

Singapore-$249 billion

Hong Kong- $255 billion

Taiwan-$282 billion

Switzerland-$289 billion

France- $332 billion

Ireland-$ 336 billion

Belgium- $375 billion

Canada- $379 billion

Cayman Islands- $419 billion

Luxembourg-$424 billion

The United Kingdom-$723 billion

China-$759 billion

Japan- $1 trillion

The Rest of the World-$1.6 trillion

Total US debt owed to other countries as of December 2024: $8.5 trillion.

As of March 2025, the US national debt stood at roughly $36.6 trillion.

According to these figures $28.1 trillion of the US debt is owed to Americans.  I'm wondering if one of the resident accountants on AN could verify these figures.

Yeah Sport, it is well know it is fiscally impossible for USA to ever clear this debt.
