A 60-year-old Thai man suffered severe chemical burns after being doused with acid while sleeping at his home in Nikhom Phatthana district, Rayong province, in the early hours of 16 December. The attack left him with extensive injuries to his body and face, including hair loss, open burn wounds and damage to his eyes and mouth, prompting an emergency response from police and rescue workers.

Police from Nikhom Phatthana Police Station were alerted to the incident at about 02:00 and coordinated with Siam Rayong rescue volunteers to assist the victim at a house in Soi 6, Sai 15, Nikhom Phatthana subdistrict. At the scene, officers found Mr Somchai, aged 60, sitting on his bed, which had been badly damaged by the corrosive substance. His hair had fallen out onto the pillow and parts of his hair and flesh were found stuck to the mattress due to the acid burns.

Rescue workers Mr Surachat Jintana and Ms Jarunee Patthimakorn said the victim was conscious but unable to open his eyes or speak properly because the acid had also burned his mouth. They believed he was attacked while asleep and unaware, as the acid appeared to have been poured directly onto him on the bed. The liquid was reportedly contained in a bottle resembling one commonly used for white spirits.

Mr Surachat, who has worked as a rescue volunteer for 10 years, said this was the first case he had encountered in which a wife allegedly attacked her husband with acid, adding that he was shocked by the severity of the injuries. Ms Jarunee said she had never dealt with a similar case and had to quickly search online for first-aid guidance on handling acid burns at the scene. Both highlighted the seriousness of the injuries and the potential for permanent harm, including the risk of blindness.

Amarin reported that investigators said the suspected motive may be jealousy, though this has not been confirmed. An unusual detail noted by responders was that the attack occurred on 16 December, which is also the victim’s birthday, making the incident particularly distressing. Police are preparing to question the victim’s partner to establish the exact cause and circumstances before proceeding with legal action.

Nice birthday gift. Wonder what Mr Somchai did to invite such an atrocious attack?
