Lao Energy Minister Malaithong Kommasith has asserted that oil imported from Thailand will remain for Lao domestic use only, with no exports to Cambodia. This statement came following discussions with Thailand's Energy Minister, Prasert Sinsukprasert, who raised concerns about potential cross-border security risks. Malaithong assured no oil will cross into Cambodia, highlighting that such actions breach Lao cross-border laws, and all involved parties are monitoring the imports closely.

This declaration follows shared concerns between Laos and Thailand regarding energy security. Lao and Thai officials are cooperating to ensure adherence to regulations on the transit of goods, with commitments to verification and transparent information exchange. Both countries aim to prevent any actions that could impact Thailand’s security or impede Laos' development efforts.

Notably, the volume of oil imported from Thailand to Laos has been stable, as confirmed by oil traders and the Customs Department. Daily truck crossings at the Chong Mek border vary, ranging from 5 to 50 trucks. Demand increases particularly between November and April due to the mining industry's fuel needs in southern Laos.

Prasert Sinsukprasert emphasized the joint efforts of various Lao agencies, reiterating that the oil from Thailand is for Lao consumption only. Measures are reinforced to avoid any illegal exports to Cambodia, aligning with both countries' security interests. This collaborative approach aims to reassure both nations of their ongoing commitment to regulating cross-border oil transactions.

Looking ahead, both Laos and Thailand will continue their partnership in monitoring oil flows and ensuring compliance with laws. These efforts reflect their dedication to maintaining regional stability while respecting legal frameworks governing cross-border trade, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Lao oil imports from Thailand are for domestic use only, no exports to Cambodia.
  • Both Laos and Thailand are enhancing cooperation to ensure compliance with laws.
  • The oil import volume remains consistent, with seasonal demand increases.
