A Thai court has sentenced Worrawan, a pregnant woman, to four years in prison for fatally assaulting her husband's alleged mistress, 23-year-old Potjanart. The incident occurred in April at a Bangkok hotel, where Worrawan attacked Potjanart out of jealousy, leading to Potjanart's death. Worrawan was also ordered to pay 850,000 baht in compensation to Potjanart's family.

The case gained public attention after well-known lawyer Nitikorn Kaewto shared the legal outcome on Facebook. The assault happened when Worrawan, accompanied by a friend, followed her husband Bas to the hotel and found him with Potjanart. Overcome by anger, Worrawan dragged Potjanart out and repeatedly assaulted her, stopping only after Potjanart began coughing up blood. Potjanart was taken to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

Initially suspected to be Bas's mistress, Potjanart was later revealed by police to be working as a party entertainer, with no personal relationship to Bas. Worrawan, who was eight months pregnant at the time, claimed her actions were not intended to kill Potjanart but were driven by emotional distress. Released on bail after a brief arrest, she faced court proceedings over the next several months.

The court determined that Worrawan's actions were intentional, yet considered her emotional state due to the perceived provocation. Her initial eight-year sentence was halved following her confession. Lawyer Nitikorn noted that the court acknowledged the circumstances that led to Worrawan's reduced sentence.

Looking forward, Worrawan's prison term and compensation order set a legal precedent in similar cases of emotional and physical response to personal betrayals. The ruling may influence how courts handle cases of provoked violence, particularly where emotional factors are involved, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Worrawan was sentenced to four years for the death of Potjanart.
  • The incident highlighted issues of jealousy and emotional distress.
  • Compensation of 850,000 baht was ordered for the victim's family.

Wow.  The usage of jealousy as a legitimate mitigation for murder?  Crazy!

Arguably a crime of passion. Used to receive minimal punishment in the courts in France and it's colonies.

Yes, @Watawattana is right and in France this is called a crime passionnel or crime of passion. The murder charge would be reduced to manslaughter.

I feel sorry that she was pregnant and feared he was about to dump her perhaps.

No excuse for killing a person but there is some empathy.

Another prison baby. Hope the kid has relatives to take care. The child can stay with mother one to three years. The other women, believe me, will spoil this kid rotten. A bit of love on the inside.

That defence in France was abolished in 1975.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_of_passion

But, based on your reply (thanks by the way), I had a quick look at this from a Thai Law point of view.  Seems Thailand is still following aspects of French Law that were abolished 50 years ago.  Mon Dieu!  TIT.

I'll probably never 'get it'.... if anyone who should be attacked and put in distress, it ought to be the cheating spouse.  The one getting attention of cheater is just going after a 'good time', and unless 3rd party is married so they are both rotten cheaters... the one who knowingly transgressed any marriage vows should pay the price, which often includes death. Not saying I approve... but let's put blame and consequence where it ought to be

Sadly this length of sentence is quite common here, even for serious crimes.

I was assaulted by my stepson a few months ago and it is likely he will only get a fine and have to pay a pittance in compensation to me. He has destroyed our family and all for his own selfish needs.

In the UK, given the severity of the assault and aggravating factors (unprovoked, premeditated, attacked from behind, sustained attack) it would reach the threshold for ABH and he would likely be given the same sentence as the lady here.

Meh. The victim was playing a dangerous game. There's lot of single guys out there but she chose the married guy

Why do the women mostly attack the other woman, rather than the unfaithful husband/boyfriend?
