MAGA civil war steals the spotlight at 'AmericaFest' conference

Featured Replies

AmericaFest, the first major Turning Point USA conference since the murder of its founder Charlie Kirk, took place in Phoenix on Thursday —but instead of showing unity, it exposed sharp rifts within the MAGA movement over anti-Semitism, leadership, and its post-Trump future. The first major gathering of Turning Point USA since the murder of its influential founder was supposed to bring America's far-right activists together to celebrate the life of Charlie Kirk.

Instead, it is laying bare the divisions of a fractious far-right coalition, increasingly worried about its electoral prospects and about President Donald Trump's fraying popularity.

Key figures in the Make America Great Again movement took to the stage in Phoenix on Thursday to tear into each other, blasting opponents for cosying up to fascists or accusing them of besmirching the memory of a man who acted as a unifying force.

Influential podcaster Ben Shapiro came straight out of the gate, attacking former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for an uncritical interview with self-described white nationalist Nick Fuentes. "The conservative movement is... in danger from charlatans who claim to speak in the name of principle, but actually traffic in conspiracism and dishonesty," he said.

Kirk had "despised" Fuentes, Shapiro added, "He knew that Nick Fuentes is an evil troll and that building him up is an act of moral imbecility, and that is precisely what Tucker Carlson did."

Carlson shot back, mocking Shapiro for suggesting censorship, which he claimed was anathema to the Turning Point founder.

"Deplatforming and denouncing people at a Charlie Kirk event. I'm like, what? It's hilarious," he told the audience a few hours later.

The brewing MAGA civil war is over who will take the reins when Trump – who cannot run for the White House again – steps back.

A plan from President Donald Trump to establish a federal standard for artificial intelligence regulation has triggered intense anger among parts of his own base. Conservative governors, hard-right Congress members and some grassroots MAGA activists have voiced their disapproval, arguing that it would grant too much power to Big Tech and take away states’ rights to protect children and workers.

The executive order draft would establish an AI Litigation Task Force led by the attorney general to challenge state AI regulations, request federal agencies to examine and possibly punish state actions and consider tying some federal funding to state adherence.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted that “states must retain the right to regulate and make laws on AI,” adding that “federalism must be preserved.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wrote that stripping states of jurisdiction to regulate AI would be “a subsidy to Big Tech” and would prevent states from guarding against online censorship, predatory apps targeting children, intellectual-property problems and infrastructure strain.

MAGA faithful fume over Trump’s AI proposal

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders of Arkansas led a group of governors this past summer in urging Congress to turn down a prolonged moratorium on state AI legislation and also insisted that the pre-emption plan should be scrapped, enabling states to protect their children and communities.

Warning, this is not a joke, this actually happened!🫢

"A photo-op feature at the Turning Point USA conference in Phoenix, AZ, has sparked damning comments on social media, even from MAGA stalwarts.

MS NOW reporter Brandy Zadrozny explained that some conference goers were expressing their “grief” by lining up to take selfies at a recreation of the tent under which Charlie Kirk was shot and killed in September.

“You can see from behind me, this is a recreation of the tent where Charlie Kirk lost his life at Utah [Valley] University in September, and people are taking selfies with it,” she reported. "

There's something wrong with MAGA supporters, and it's not only their ears.

The convention, which began on Thursday and is ongoing, comes as tensions grow between prominent right-wing commentators and influencers over the question of American support for Israel.

During a speech, popular pro-Israel podcaster Ben Shapiro attacked former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for his interview with right-wing influencer Nick Fuentes, who regularly criticises Israel.

Shapiro said Carlson's recent decision to interview Fuentes was "an act of moral imbecility". He called Fuentes a "Hitler apologist, Nazi-loving, anti-American piece of refuse".

But Carlson hit back in his own speech, attacking what he described as attempts to suppress speech that is critical of Israel.

Carlson also took aim at Israel, saying: "If a man commits a crime, do we kill his kids? I don’t care if it’s in Minneapolis or Gaza City. No, we don’t."

He added that "God is not on any country’s side".

He criticised anti-Muslim bigotry, saying: "What you're watching now, attacking people on the... attacking millions of Americans because they're Muslims? It's disgusting."

Steve Bannon, former White House strategist for US President Donald Trump, also stoked controversy by saying that Charlie Kirk opposed "this concept of greater Israel and Israel first".

Bannon went further and denounced Shapiro.

"Ben Shapiro is like a cancer, and that cancer spreads," Bannon declared to cheers from the crowd.

The main issue here is unconditional support for Israeli actions that have been condemned by governments worldwide.

One faction is in favor of that.

Another faction opposes it, and also the tactics used by the Israel Lobby in Washington.

How this plays out will have a profound effect on young Republicans going far beyond MAGA. Just as Charlie Kirk himself had influence outside and greater than his own TPUSA organization.
