Air quality in Ho Chi Minh City has worsened in 2025, driven by increased fine dust pollution and heavy traffic, according to a recent report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. The 2025 Environmental Quality, Water Resources Monitoring, and Emission Source Supervision Program used data from 118 monitoring sites, including areas from the newly expanded city boundaries. The report revealed growing concerns over total suspended particulates (TSP) and PM10 levels, especially in industrial and high-traffic zones.

Heavy traffic, industrial activities, and transboundary pollution were identified as the main pollution sources. Significant PM2.5 increases posed the highest risk, with levels exceeding national standards by 1.1 to 4.6 times at key hotspots. In contrast, residential areas mostly escaped severe pollution spikes, with some areas recording lower dust levels.

Benzene, a carcinogen, also exceeded safety limits at certain traffic locations. Despite a slight reduction, noise levels remained problematic near major roads and waste facilities. Other pollutants, like SO2, NO2, and CO, stayed within acceptable levels. Notably, the daily Air Quality Index (AQI) reported "good" for most of the year, with only a few "poor" days and minimal "unhealthy" levels.

To tackle these issues, Ho Chi Minh City plans to establish 157 new air monitoring stations for better warning capabilities. The construction sector is also developing a "greener" transport roadmap, incorporating electric vehicles, low-emission zones, stricter motorbike emission controls, and enhanced dust reduction measures at construction sites to mitigate pollution sources, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City's air quality worsened due to traffic and pollution.
  • PM2.5 levels exceeded standards significantly at traffic and industrial sites.
  • New initiatives aim to enhance monitoring and green transportation.
