Vietnam's passport has improved its standing in the latest Henley Passport Index, moving up to the 90th position. This change allows Vietnamese citizens visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 50 out of 227 destinations, aligning it with countries like Bhutan, Burundi, Cambodia, and Liberia. The current update marks a small recovery from its previous position at 92nd in October.

Earlier in the year, Vietnam saw a positive shift when its passport moved up seven places to 84th in July, providing access to 51 destinations. However, since then, it faced a decline, dropping to 88th in September. The Henley Passport Index, renowned for tracking global travel freedom, bases its rankings on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In this latest ranking cycle, Singapore maintained its position as the holder of the world's most powerful passport, granting visa-free access to 193 countries. Meanwhile, Malaysia's passport also saw an ascent, breaking into the top 10. Vietnam's position remains strong within Southeast Asia, ranking above Laos and Myanmar.

Expert opinions suggest that these incremental changes in passport rankings can significantly affect citizens' global mobility and international relations. Vietnam’s upward movement can facilitate easier travel for its citizens, boosting tourism and economic ties.

Looking forward, the Henley Passport Index will continue to update its rankings as changes in visa policies occur worldwide. With the next review, Vietnam hopes to further improve or maintain its position to enhance travel freedom for its citizens, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam's passport now ranks 90th, allowing access to 50 destinations.
  • Singapore retains the most powerful passport status globally.
  • Henley Passport Index reflects changes in global visa policies.
