Seven individuals were arrested in Ho Chi Minh City for running a scheme that turned pork into fake beef using cow's blood and industrial chemicals. The arrests, announced by the city's Economic Police, involve Le Quang Quyet and Nguyen Duc Dat, both 33, alongside five others, under investigation for dealing in counterfeit food products.

The investigation kicked off last month when police conducted a raid on a local processing facility. During the inspection, authorities caught Quyet and his team labeling pork falsely as beef. They found dozens of kilograms of meat ready for distribution, revealing clear signs of counterfeiting. This led police to a warehouse in Hiep Binh Ward, where Dat was captured and about 250 kg of fake beef was seized.

Quyet has been identified as the operation's leader, running without a business license since February. He admitted Dat was responsible for providing both the instructions and materials needed for the process. The materials included industrial-grade sodium metabisulfite and other additives, used alongside cow's blood to give pork the appearance of beef. The processed meat was then packaged and frozen.

The facility reportedly produced around 600 kilograms of fake beef daily, supplying about 75 restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City and nearby regions. The counterfeit products were sold for VND118,000 to VND140,000 (US$4.48-5.31) per kilogram, significantly cheaper than genuine beef prices in the area. The ongoing investigation continues as authorities aim to uncover all the eateries involved in purchasing the fraudulent meat.

Looking ahead, the investigation is set to thoroughly examine the supply chain and pinpoint all establishments that received the counterfeit products. Authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to dismantle illegal operations that threaten public health and safety, reported VN Express.
