A married couple was arrested in Chiang Mai for allegedly managing a major online gambling network with connections to Cambodia's Poipet. The authorities seized several luxury assets during the raid, including sports cars and branded items. The gambling operation, "Thai Slot Extra 88 VIP," reportedly had financial dealings exceeding 1 billion baht.

The crackdown was led by Provincial Police Region 6 and Phitsanulok police, following a six-month investigation. The network was linked financially to Poipet, resulting in significant cross-border money flows. Phairat Ruekthawil and Namphet Suwanthadakul were arrested under warrants issued by the Phitsanulok provincial court on charges of organizing illegal online gambling and money laundering.

Police seized assets from the couple’s home in the Doi Saket district. Items included five luxury sports cars, such as a Mercedes-Benz E-Class and a Nissan Skyline GT-R, along with three motorcycles, twelve land title deeds, luxury watches, gold-framed amulets, and collectible figures. Authorities suspect these were bought with proceeds from the gambling operations.

Experts emphasize the scale and complexity of the gambling network, noting the sophisticated financial linkages with Cambodia. The operation’s discovery underscores the need for increased surveillance on cross-border financial activities. Such networks are increasingly employing technology to evade law enforcement.

The couple will face legal proceedings, and authorities are investigating to identify any accomplices or additional assets tied to the operation. Police have emphasized their commitment to combating illegal gambling activities in the region. Further investigations might lead to more arrests and asset seizures in the coming weeks, reported Bangkok Post.
