Ho Chi Minh City has proposed a 15-kilometer cable car system to connect Co Ong Airport with the center of Con Dao. This initiative aims to reduce potential congestion and minimize environmental impact on the island's forests. Anticipating a rise in tourists, city officials see the cable car as a sustainable transport solution.

Currently, Co Ong Airport is accessible via a narrow, two-lane road that takes 20–30 minutes to reach the town center. Authorities project the airport will serve 2 million passengers annually by 2030, increasing to 3 million in the next decade. Expanding the existing road to accommodate this growth is impractical due to environmental concerns, as it would involve clearing significant forest land.

With a winding and steep route, the current road poses a risk of congestion that hinders traffic flow. A potential road expansion would require clearing over 15 hectares of forest, an environmental cost city planners wish to avoid. Additionally, waterway transport isn't feasible due to challenging sea conditions.

The proposed cable car system is inspired by similar infrastructure, such as the mainland–Cat Ba route in northern Vietnam. The cable car would not only address transport needs but also enhance tourism by providing scenic views of the island’s natural landscapes. Officials suggest this aligns with Con Dao's sustainable and high-end tourism strategy.

Preliminary estimates indicate the cable car would impact roughly 3 hectares of forest, significantly less than road expansion efforts. Con Dao spans nearly 76 square kilometers, with over 78% designated as national parkland hosting sensitive ecosystems. As it develops into a special economic zone, the island focuses on eco-tourism and nature conservation, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City plans a cable car to reduce road congestion and preserve Con Dao’s environment.
  • The cable car is a scenic, sustainable alternative to road expansion.
  • The project aligns with the island's eco-tourism and development goals.
