A wild elephant nicknamed “Chao Khuad” caused extensive damage to the kitchen area of Wat Khlong Mahat in Tha Takiap district, Chachoengsao province, on the morning of 25 December 2025, after entering the temple grounds while monks were out on alms rounds. The elephant smashed concrete walls and kitchen equipment, leaving utensils scattered, but no people were injured. Local officials and volunteer patrols later managed to drive the animal back into the forest behind the temple.

 

The incident was reported by Phra Ajarn Wisanu, the abbot of Wat Khlong Mahat, who alerted local authorities after discovering the damage. According to the abbot, the elephant broke through a concrete wall into the kitchen and then forced its way into an inner room, overturning pots, rice cookers and bowls. He said there was no rice or food stored in the room, suggesting the elephant may have become agitated after smelling food from previous cooking during a recent Kathin ceremony but failing to find anything to eat.

 

Following the report, Kamnan Somjit Sathuchat, village head of Tha Takiap subdistrict, assigned Mr Somwong Chanchoti, head of the Ban Khlong Mahat wild elephant monitoring volunteer unit, to inspect the site and assist the temple. When the team arrived, they found the elephant still inside the temple grounds, using its trunk to drink water from a large jar behind the temple hall. Volunteers closely monitored the animal’s behaviour to prevent further damage before pushing it back towards the forest area behind the temple.

 

The response involved coordination between local leaders, volunteer patrols, and conservation officers from the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary. Officials focused on ensuring the safety of monks and residents while preventing the elephant from re-entering the temple compound. Photographs of the damage were taken and submitted to the Tha Takiap district chief for further consideration.

 

Local authorities said the incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by communities living near forested areas where wild elephants roam. The temple kitchen sustained structural damage, including broken concrete walls and kitchen equipment was rendered unusable. The abbot confirmed that the room contained no food items at the time of the incident.

 

ThaiRath reported that officials plan to present the case at a district-level meeting to consider compensation and repairs to the damaged temple facilities. Volunteer patrols and wildlife officers will continue monitoring the area to reduce the risk of similar incidents. Authorities also emphasised the importance of continued cooperation between communities and conservation teams in managing human–elephant interactions.
