A 72-year-old retired teacher was killed after his car crashed into trees and burst into flames in a rubber plantation in Rayong province on 27 December, leaving his body burned inside the vehicle. The incident occurred at about 15.00 on a small access road to a home in Moo 1, Huai Yang subdistrict, Klaeng district, causing shock among local residents and prompting an urgent emergency response.

Police from Klaeng Police Station said the fire engulfed the car rapidly, preventing any rescue attempt. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within around 15 minutes, but the victim was found dead at the scene inside the wreckage.

The crash took place as the victim, later identified as Mr Pornin, aged 72, an elderly retired civil servant teacher, was driving home from a local market. According to witness accounts, his car veered off the road, struck a concrete edge and then crashed into a tree before hitting rubber trees in the plantation.

The vehicle involved was a three-door Honda saloon car, which was completely destroyed by the fire. The narrow access road runs through a rubber plantation area, with limited space for evasive manoeuvres once control of the vehicle was lost.

Pol Capt Nattakrit Khongrod, an investigating officer at Klaeng Police Station, received the report and coordinated with Huai Yang Subdistrict Administrative Organisation firefighters and rescue volunteers. Officers said the intensity of the blaze suggested the fire broke out almost immediately after the impact.

Initial police assessments indicate the driver may have suffered a sudden medical episode while driving. Authorities noted that the deceased had underlying health conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes. It was also confirmed that Mr Pornin had a scheduled medical appointment on 6 January next year, reinforcing the possibility that his health played a role in the crash. No evidence of other vehicles being involved was found at the scene.

The body was transported to Klaeng Hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination to try to establish the precise cause of death. After forensic procedures are completed, the remains will be released to relatives for religious funeral rites.

Daily News reported that police said the investigation will formally conclude once medical and forensic findings are reviewed. Officials also reminded elderly drivers and families to monitor health conditions closely, particularly when travelling alone.
