Police in Chiang Rai have arrested three suspects and seized one million methamphetamine pills and one kilogram of crystal meth in a drug trafficking operation at a provincial bus terminal. The arrests were made on 26 December 2025, preventing the drugs from being transported from the northern border area to inner regions of Thailand.

The operation took place at Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 2, where officers stopped two passengers before their coach departed. The suspects were found carrying two unusually heavy suitcases, which upon inspection contained large quantities of illicit drugs, prompting an immediate arrest and a subsequent expansion of the investigation.

Authorities said the arrests followed intelligence indicating that a drug shipment was about to be moved from the border area into central parts of the country. Police monitored incoming vehicles at the bus terminal and noticed a car dropping off two passengers with luggage before leaving the area quickly, raising suspicion.

The suspects initially detained were identified as Mr Phongsaphak and Ms Phirunphon, both from Phetchabun province. When officers asked them to open their suitcases, they discovered 400,000 methamphetamine pills and one kilogram of crystal meth hidden inside.

Following questioning, police expanded the investigation and arrested a third suspect, Mr Rachat, a Chiang Rai resident, at his home in Rob Wiang sub-district, Mueang Chiang Rai district. A further 600,000 methamphetamine pills were seized during this follow-up arrest, bringing the total haul to one million pills.

Police officials stated that the suspects confessed to transporting the drugs from Mae Sai district, a known border area for narcotics trafficking. The drugs were reportedly divided into separate loads and packed into suitcases to be transported by public bus to destinations further inside the country.

According to police, the suspects admitted that if the first delivery had not been intercepted, they planned to return to collect and transport the remaining drugs later. Senior officers involved in the operation included Pol Maj Gen Manop Senakul, Commander of Chiang Rai Provincial Police, and Pol Col Rattaphon Noi Changkhit, Deputy Commander.

The seized drugs and all three suspects have been handed over to investigators at Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station for further legal proceedings. Police said charges would be laid in accordance with Thailand’s narcotics laws, which carry severe penalties.

Khoasod reported that authorities indicated that investigations will continue to identify any additional individuals involved in the trafficking network. Police have reiterated their commitment to intercepting drug shipments moving from border areas into the interior of the country.
