More than 2,700 employees at Panko Vina, a garment factory in Ho Chi Minh City, are facing job loss as the factory plans to shut down in mid-January, leaving many workers without bonuses. The closure announcement is particularly stressful with Tet, the Lunar New Year, approaching. Workers like Nguyen Thi Cam Thi, four months pregnant, express deep concern about finding new employment and managing holiday expenses.

Panko Vina, part of South Korea's Panko Textile Group, once provided jobs for over 8,000 people. However, a downturn in orders post-Covid-19 and a failed acquisition by a Hong Kong investor forced its closure. Employees are receiving their January salary and a VND2 million support payment, but uncertainty dominates, especially for pregnant workers and those on maternity leave who may not receive their benefits.

The closure impacts families deeply connected to the factory for years, like Vo Thi Hoa, who planned to use her bonus for Tet expenses. The labor union is negotiating with Panko Vina for additional benefits and urges workers not to prematurely withdraw social insurance.

Ho Chi Minh City’s labor authorities say seven companies in nearby sectors are ready to hire all affected workers. These businesses, spanning electronics, engineering, and manufacturing, have openings for nearly 3,800 positions and plan to interview workers in the coming weeks.

Key Takeaways

  • Panko Vina's closure affects over 2,700 workers, with no year-end bonus.
  • Nearby companies express interest in hiring displaced employees.
  • Uncertainty grows with Tet close, particularly for pregnant workers.
