Seven people were injured after a fireworks device exploded during New Year celebrations in Soi Pridi Banomyong 26, off Sukhumvit 71, in Bangkok’s Watthana district on 1 January 2026. The blast scattered debris into the surrounding area, causing injuries to those nearby and prompting an immediate police and rescue response.

The incident occurred as residents and revellers marked the New Year. According to initial findings, the fireworks were privately set off without official permission in a residential alley. Emergency responders confirmed that four people sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene, while three others suffered abrasions and were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Police said the fireworks involved were flower-style fireworks, three of which were seized from the scene for forensic examination. Investigators are assessing whether the devices met safety standards and determining the precise cause of the explosion. Preliminary statements from injured parties indicated that the fireworks were placed close to a wall and later toppled during use, triggering the blast and sending fragments outward.

Pol Col Phisit Meewiriyakul, superintendent of Khlong Tan Police Station, said officers are awaiting forensic results before deciding whether charges will be filed. He confirmed that those who possessed and ignited the fireworks would be summoned for further questioning after the New Year holiday period. The investigation will assess whether any legal violations occurred in relation to fireworks regulations.

Officials from the Watthana District Office also inspected the site following the incident. Nattaporn Pimchuta Sakunsittithada, director of the Watthana District Office, along with Woravee Thanadamrongchaiporn, assistant director and municipal enforcement officers, confirmed the fireworks were set off illegally without prior authorisation.

The incident has renewed attention on the dangers of unauthorised fireworks use during festive periods, particularly in densely populated urban areas. Police and district officials reiterated that unauthorised fireworks pose risks to public safety and property and stressed the importance of complying with regulations.

Amarin reported that investigators will proceed once forensic testing is complete, with further interviews expected in the coming days. Officials said any legal action would be taken in accordance with the findings and relevant laws governing fireworks use in Bangkok.
