Thailand is advancing with plans for two significant Red Line commuter rail extensions under the Mass Rapid Transit Master Plan (M-MAP2). Contracts for these projects are scheduled to be signed by February 2026, with services expected to start in March 2029. The extensions involve the Rangsit-Thammasat University and Siriraj-Taling Chan-Salaya routes, collectively representing an investment of over 20 billion baht.

This initiative marks the second phase of the M-MAP2, focusing on essential transport expansions in Bangkok. The Red Line projects included are categorized under A1, indicating readiness for immediate progress. Key constructions include the Rangsit to Thammasat University extension (8.84 km, 6.473 billion baht) and the Siriraj to Salaya extension (20.5 km, 15.176 billion baht), alongside the Light and Dark Red Line “Missing Link” (25.9 km, 34.95 billion baht).

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is overseeing these expansions and has already initiated tender processes through electronic bidding. These tenders were listed on the government procurement platform on December 29, 2025. Winning bids will be announced, and contracts signed by February 2026, with a Notice to Proceed expected in March 2026.

Construction for both extensions will span 36 months, targeting completion by February 2029. The Rangsit-Thammasat route will serve districts in Pathum Thani province and include five stations, while the Siriraj-Salaya line will add eight stations extending west from Taling Chan Station, reported The Nation.

  • Thailand plans to start Red Line extensions by March 2029.
