Ho Chi Minh City will limit student phone use during recess at over 500 secondary, high, and vocational schools starting in 2026. The policy aims to reduce passive screen time without enforcing an outright ban. Schools will introduce movement-based activities, sports, performances, and quieter options like reading and chess to engage students.

This initiative, outlined by the city's Department of Education and Training on December 30, encourages positive alternatives to phones during break times. Students may still use phones for study or group activities in designated areas with teacher approval. The policy is designed to prevent isolated phone use like gaming or endless scrolling.

A pilot program implemented in October at 16 schools reported success, with a marked decrease in passive phone engagement. More than 80% of students participated in activities, and nearly 98% of parents supported the initiative. However, challenges such as attachment to gaming and limited facilities were noted.

National regulations allow phone use for educational purposes during classes with teacher permission. Despite no outright ban during breaks, phone usage remains a topic of debate. In August, Hanoi implemented stricter measures, collecting students' phones at the start of the day and returning them post-lessons.

Looking forward, authorities will establish clear guidelines and staff responsibilities to manage phone use effectively. This approach may also influence other provinces contemplating similar restrictions. The focus remains on balancing educational needs with curbing unnecessary screen time, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City will restrict student phone use during recess starting 2026.

  • A pilot program showed decreased passive screen time and high parental support.

  • National rules allow phone use for learning, but policies continue to evolve.
