Vietnamese authorities have arrested 41 people for a scheme involving fake rescues of trafficking victims to extort nearly $636,000 from their families. The arrests by Ho Chi Minh City police include Nguyen Thanh Hai, accused of leading a criminal network involved in fraud and human trafficking. The operation targeted families of Vietnamese citizens trafficked to Cambodia, exploiting emotional appeals for assistance.

The network, led by Hai, constructed a false public image as a benevolent "street knight" dedicated to rescuing trafficking victims without charge. This image was spread through social media, where videos and articles praising the purported rescues were widely circulated. In reality, police found the group demanded money from victims' families and staged rescues.

Hai's group coordinated with accomplices in Cambodia, extracting ransoms and profiting from the difference. Authorities allege the group extorted 120 individuals since 2023, amassing over VND16.7 billion, with Hai personally receiving more than VND2.2 billion. Illegal border crossings were also part of their operation, sidestepping official procedures when returning victims to Vietnam.

The crackdown involved Vietnam's PC02 and central C02 units, working with Cambodian authorities to dismantle similar operations. Among the busted groups was one led by Le Van Thanh, known for recruiting workers for Cambodian scams. Another, led by Huynh Cao Cuong, also used social media to stage fake rescues, inflating ransom demands to pocket the surplus.

In response, local police have cautioned against offers of lucrative overseas work and advised vigilance when seeking help from social media groups. The arrests highlight ongoing efforts to combat high-tech fraud and protect citizens from cross-border trafficking scams, reported VN Express.
