Ho Chi Minh City has launched its first pilot program using drones for deliveries, aiming to leverage drone technology for urban logistics. Organized by the city's Department of Science and Technology along with other local technology firms, this initiative marks the start of a new era in delivery systems. The trials test unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under a controlled framework approved by local council authorities, with permits valid until 2026.

This initiative follows a growing global trend toward integrating drone technology in urban deliveries. The trial aims to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of drones in postal and logistics operations. On January 5, at Saigon Hi-Tech Park, two scenarios were demonstrated, showcasing both single-parcel and multi-point delivery capabilities over areas ranging from 200m to over 400m.

Phạm Huỳnh Quang Hiếu, deputy director of the Department of Science and Technology, noted that these trials would assess operational safety and efficiency in real-life conditions. The outcomes are expected to help develop policies for broader drone deployment. Industry experts like Lương Việt Quốc from Real-time Robotics Việt Nam emphasize the trials as crucial for refining UAV technology, especially in urban logistics.

Looking ahead, if successful, authorities plan to extend the trials to longer routes such as the Cần Giờ–Vũng Tàu corridor by early 2026. This aligns with the city’s objectives to enhance smart logistics and support e-commerce, further integrating UAV technology into the economy. The trials are key to addressing technological and safety challenges involved with urban drone deployment, reported Vietnam News.
