Two South Korean nationals, Kim Tae Hyung and Cha Jin Young, were sentenced to eight years in prison by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court for organizing prostitution and bribery. The verdict, given on January 5, follows charges related to operations at their restaurant where staff arranged sexual services for Korean customers. Both were fined VND30 million (approximately US$1,141).

In late 2022, Kim and Cha opened a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, targeting Korean clientele. After the business struggled, they opted to illicitly boost revenue by involving their staff in prostitution. They disguised these activities on invoices with code words, such as "Green jacket 17," and misrepresented hotel services as seafood combos.

The illegal scheme was uncovered in July 2023 when evidence emerged of staff arranging encounters between women and clients. Restaurant manager Lee Hyun Jun and employee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Loan played roles in this setup, each receiving a three-year prison sentence. Additionally, hotel broker Le Tan Thanh received a sentence accounting for his pretrial detention.

The case highlighted another layer of fraud through bribery intended to sidestep inspections. Kim and Cha admitted to paying VND840 million to intermediaries Bui Thi Phuong Dung and Bui Duy Ha, who claimed they would prevent regulatory checks. However, investigations revealed the intermediaries had no real influence and misused the funds. Dung was sentenced to seven years for fraud, while Ha received three years.

The court emphasized the severe breach of public order and law as justification for the harsh penalties imposed on the defendants, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways:

  • Kim and Cha were sentenced for disguising prostitution operations.

  • Their attempt to bribe officials exposed a larger fraud scheme.

  • The court's ruling serves as a deterrence against similar crimes.
