Ho Chi Minh City is experiencing unusual rain in January, disrupting the typical dry season. This rare weather event is instigated by a low-pressure trough combined with cold air, causing consecutive days of precipitation.

Typically dry this time of year, the city saw rain begin Monday afternoon, persisting into a misty and overcast Tuesday. The weather initially affected western areas such as Binh Tan and the former District 8, extending by afternoon to suburbs like Hoc Mon and Cu Chi. This sudden deluge has caused delays for commuters and affected daily outdoor activities.

Le Dinh Quyet of the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center noted that while January rain has occurred in past years, it is usually short-lived. This year's persistent rain results from a low-pressure belt and cold air. He emphasized this prolonged wet spell is atypical for the season.

Expert forecasts suggest rain will continue into Wednesday, but with decreasing intensity. A more significant shift is anticipated between January 8 and 13, as a stronger cold air mass moves in. This change is expected to clear the rain, bringing drier and cooler conditions, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City faces rare January rain, impacting usual dry season.

  • Meteorologists attribute the prolonged rain to low pressure and cold air.

  • Dry conditions and cooler nights are expected by mid-January.
