A 41-year-old female customs officer was killed in a late-night car crash in Bueng Kan province after her vehicle struck a tree and burst into flames, with her dog also dying at the scene. The crash occurred on a dark rural road with no brake marks found, leading police to suspect the driver fell asleep at the wheel. Despite rescue attempts by a nearby resident, the victim could not be freed before the fire engulfed the car.

The incident happened shortly after midnight on 7 January 2026 on Rural Highway 3009, the Chaiyaporn–Non Champa Thong route, in Ban Don Siat village, Ban Tong subdistrict, Seka district. Police from Sokkham station received the report via the 191 emergency radio centre and dispatched investigators, rescue workers from Sawang Si Wilai Foundation’s Sokkham unit, local emergency medical services, and a fire engine.

At the scene, a Honda sedan with Nong Khai registration plates was found with its front end against a large tree on a bend in the road. Firefighters and villagers took more than 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which had fully engulfed the vehicle. Inside, officers found the charred body of the driver and her dog.

The victim was identified as a 41-year-old woman from Nong Khai province, employed as a customs officer at Bueng Kan Customs House. According to police, she had been travelling back to work after spending the New Year holiday away. Her body was recovered and later released to relatives for religious rites.

A local resident, identified only as Mr Lia, told police he heard a loud crash and ran from his home around 200 metres away. He said the driver was unconscious and while he managed to open the door, her leg was trapped against the front console. As smoke and flames intensified, he was forced to retreat and could only watch as the fire consumed the car.

Khoasod reported that investigators reported no visible skid or brake marks at the scene. Police believe the driver may have fallen asleep while driving. Forensic officers conducted a detailed examination of the crash site. Police will finalise their investigation once forensic findings are complete and all evidence has been reviewed.
