Thai police have dismantled a suspected transnational teak smuggling network after intercepting a lorry carrying illegally sourced timber in Chiang Mai. The operation, conducted by the Environmental Crime Suppression Division on January 8, 2026, uncovered four large teak logs hidden under a tarpaulin. The driver, Daeng, 42, confessed to transporting the timber from Mae Hong Son to a factory in Ayutthaya.

This arrest is part of a broader crackdown on illegal teak logging and trafficking. The operation was led by Police Lt. Col. Jirayu Inkaew and Lt. Col. Asira Ritdet, following tips about teak felled in Mae Sariang forest areas. Authorities suspect smugglers used fake documents to claim the wood came from legitimate agricultural reform land, while it was actually sourced from protected forests.

The apprehension was made after officers noticed a suspicious lorry on Highway 1103 in northern Thailand. The logs' size raised suspicion, contradicting claims they were from recently established plantations. Upon further inspection, experts found the timber bore fresh cuts and lacked proper markings, proving they were illegally harvested.

Charges have been filed against Daeng, a 43-year-old female factory owner, and a 63-year-old man linked to the wood sale. Allegations include illegal logging and the transportation of protected timber. Maj. Gen. Anek Taosupap noted this as part of a larger illegal network involving document forgery and illicit transportation.

Authorities plan to extend the investigation to uncover financial backers, network routes, and potential involvement of state officials. The police emphasize their intent to prosecute those involved to the full extent of the law, aiming to dismantle the entire smuggling operation, reported Khaosod.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai authorities arrested suspects in a transnational teak smuggling ring.

  • The operation was part of a larger effort against illegal logging in Thailand.
