Vietnam Limits Online Ad Viewing to 5 Seconds

Vietnam has enacted a new regulation limiting online video ads to five seconds before they can be skipped by viewers, effective February 15. This policy aims to eliminate longer, non-skippable video ads that currently range from seven to 30 seconds. The government decree updates the Law on Advertising, affecting how platforms display video and animated image ads.

Previously, viewers encountered non-skippable ads on various platforms, often dictated by the ad package and user device, resulting in a mixed online viewing experience. The decree also addresses static image ads, prohibiting platforms from delaying users’ ability to close them. Furthermore, stricter rules are imposed on pop-up ads, mandating a visible close button and preventing misleading icons, ensuring ads are dismissible with one quick action.

The new law requires all online ads to feature clear instructions and icons for users to report illegal content and manage their ad preferences. Advertisers must act swiftly, removing any law-violating ads within 24 hours following a government request. Non-compliance enables regulators to implement technical measures to halt the offending ads and associated services.

Telecommunications companies and internet service providers are also tasked with blocking access to illegal ads and services within a 24-hour window upon receiving an official request. This regulatory move is expected to improve user experience and clamp down on unsolicited and inappropriate advertising content across the digital landscape in Vietnam, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam mandates maximum of five seconds before video ads can be skipped.

  • Platforms must provide clear options to report illegal content and manage ads.

  • Telecoms and ISPs are required to block illegal ads within 24 hours of notice.

Well that’s a good thing, it certainly would be nice if this were implemented here, there and everywhere.
