HCM City is setting strategic goals to transform the Cái Mép-Thị Vải deep-water port complex into a major international transshipment hub. By 2030, the city’s seaport system is forecasted to manage 440.8 million to 531.8 million tonnes of cargo. This marks a key part of the national master plan for economic growth aimed at exceeding a 10% increase during 2026-2030.

Currently, the Cái Mép-Thị Vải port primarily processes domestic import-export cargo, with only 4% of container throughput serving international needs, mainly bound for Cambodia. With enhancements to the navigation channel allowing for larger vessels, the city aims to increase transshipment shares to 10% by 2030 and up to 25% by 2050. Local industrial parks and zones contribute significantly to the port complex's operations.

HCM City is investing heavily in logistics and transport infrastructure to support this initiative. Plans include regional logistics centers, digitalized supply chains, and improved customs processes. Improved road connections, such as the inter-port road and links to National Highway 51, aim to enhance multimodal transport efficiency.

Furthermore, investment in the Cần Giờ international transshipment port has been approved, set to work alongside the Cái Mép Hạ terminals. This development will position the region to compete with other major Asian ports. Experts highlight the importance of connectivity between local ports and the broader economic integration this will bring.

As global trade patterns shift, the strategic upgrade of the Cái Mép-Thị Vải port complex is vital for Việt Nam to solidify its role in the global maritime value chain. The government emphasizes that this transformation is essential for both regional and national economic growth.

In 2024, the port complex handled 152 million tonnes, representing around 34% of Việt Nam’s total container volume, reported Vietnam News.
