Police in Vietnam have dismantled a major online gambling and fraud operation, arresting 35 individuals linked to a scheme that defrauded victims of VND9.3 trillion (US$354 million). The arrests occurred on December 31 across several northern municipalities, including Hanoi. The operation involved advanced technology and social media to deceive victims.

This crackdown follows a similar incident in mid-December when 22 Vietnamese suspects were arrested in Cambodia for fraud, with about 3,000 victims swindled out of $285 million. Since 2020, victims in Vietnam have been defrauded of $1.5 billion through more than 24,000 online fraud instances. Criminal gangs across Southeast Asia often use locations like casinos and hotels for orchestrating these extensive cyber frauds.

Authorities have seized five vehicles, 42 mobile phones, and frozen 125 bank accounts associated with the operation. These measures aim to hinder further fraudulent activities by the network. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime notes that Cambodia hosts numerous scam centers that exploit vulnerable individuals in an illicit multibillion-dollar industry.

Moving forward, law enforcement agencies are likely to continue their focus on curbing online scams and fraud rings. Additional cooperation between countries in Southeast Asia may be necessary to tackle this widespread issue effectively. Further technological advancements may also play a key role in preventing such cybercrimes, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam arrests 35 in online fraud scheme worth $354 million.

  • Authorities confiscated assets and froze bank accounts linked to the operation.
