A 32-year-old man with a long history of drug-related offences has fatally stabbed his 64-year-old mother inside their home in Chiang Rai, before attempting to take his own life. The incident occurred late on the night of 10 January and was captured on CCTV footage reviewed by relatives and police, prompting urgent intervention by emergency services.

Police from Muang Chiang Rai Police Station were alerted at around 11.30pm after reports of a violent domestic dispute at a property on Ratsadon Bamrung Road, Moo 13, Rob Wiang subdistrict. The house, which also operated as a noodle shop, was found locked from the inside at both the front and rear entrances, while loud arguing could be heard from within.

According to investigators, relatives watched CCTV footage on the shop’s display and saw a heated confrontation between the mother and son escalating inside the house. They urgently informed police, who coordinated with rescue workers to cut the locks and force entry into the property due to concerns for the occupants’ safety.

Once inside, officers discovered the body of Mrs Suphaporn, aged 64, lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. Nearby was her son, Mr Phakin, aged 32, who had inflicted a knife wound to his own neck in an apparent suicide attempt after the attack. Rescue personnel administered first aid at the scene before transferring him to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital for emergency treatment.

Initial questioning of neighbours indicated that loud shouting had been heard before the incident, and that Mr Phakin appeared to be behaving erratically, similar to someone under the influence of drugs. Police confirmed that background checks revealed he had previously been prosecuted in several drug-related cases, supporting suspicions that drug-induced psychosis may have contributed to the violence.

Forensic officers and medical examiners from Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital were deployed to collect evidence and conduct an examination of the scene. Police have stated that Mr Phakin remains under guard in hospital and will be formally charged once his condition stabilises, with serious criminal charges in connection with his mother’s death.

Daily News reported that the killing has deeply shocked neighbours and regular customers of the noodle shop, who were familiar with both the victim and the location. Authorities have emphasised that the investigation is ongoing and that all evidence, including CCTV footage, will be used to support the prosecution.
