Authorities in Thailand have detained 16 Myanmar nationals attempting to cross into Cambodia illegally. The men were apprehended by the Burapha Task Force, an army ranger unit, and Khlong Nam Sai police in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province. The group was discovered walking along a farm track in Nong Prue village without any travel documents.

According to officials, all individuals were from Myanmar’s Mandalay region and lacked passports or legal papers. They informed authorities that they were lured by Facebook job advertisements for cleaning positions, with a promised salary of $500 per month. The migrants contacted a Facebook administrator and were subsequently transported to the border by a Thai man and a Myanmar man in a black pickup truck.

Each migrant reportedly paid 12,000 baht for the journey, police disclosed. However, no escorts or smugglers were present at the scene during the arrests. The group has been transferred to the Khlong Nam Sai police for further legal action.

The region has seen an increase in illegal crossings due to economic hardships and the appeal of better-paid jobs. This incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by migrants seeking work abroad and the risks involved. Thai authorities continuously patrol border areas to curb illegal migration and associated activities.

Looking forward, regional authorities aim to tighten border security and collaborate with neighboring countries to prevent such incidents. Efforts will also focus on dismantling the networks facilitating illegal crossings and ensuring better enforcement of immigration laws, reported Khaosod.
