The American International School Vietnam (AISVN) has been officially dissolved by Ho Chi Minh City authorities due to ongoing financial controversies. The dissolution follows the arrest of the school's chairwoman and involves over US$100 million raised from parents. The city's People’s Committee announced the decision on January 12, mandating that the school and its investor, American International School Education JSC, address all outstanding financial, personnel, and legal obligations.

The closure comes after AISVN's suspension, beginning July 1, 2024, for failing to meet teaching, financial, and staffing requirements. Problems persisted past the suspension, prompting education authorities to recommend dissolution. The school and its operating company owe over VND31 billion ($1.18 million) in unpaid insurance contributions.

In May, AISVN chairwoman Nguyen Thi Ut Em was arrested for disturbing public order. Authorities are investigating potential illegal capital mobilization involving contracts with parents. Over 900 parents were involved in interest-free financial packages worth approximately VND3.6 trillion ($137 million), with promises of repayment upon their children's graduation.

Founded in 2006, AISVN offered the International Baccalaureate program to about 1,200 students. With annual tuition between VND280 million and VND725 million, the school employed over 250 teachers, including 129 foreign staff. After ceasing operations, around 700 students transferred to other schools or pursued education abroad.

Looking ahead, the city's Department of Education and Training will support student transfers to ensure educational continuity. The dissolved school's unfinished financial settlements, including outstanding salaries and collected tuition refunds, remain crucial issues. Authorities emphasize that AISVN must fulfill all obligations to affected parties, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • AISVN dissolved following financial controversy involving over $100 million.

  • The school must settle legal and financial obligations, including refunds and salaries.

  • Student education continuity is prioritized with transfer support to other schools.
