A 33-year-old man has been arrested after his mother was beaten to death at their home in Suwannaphum district, Roi Et province, in an incident discovered on the morning of 13 January. Police said the woman died at the scene from severe facial injuries, causing alarm among local residents who gathered outside the property.

Police were alerted at about 07:30, when Pol Lt Col Chaiya Namsimma, Deputy Investigation Superintendent at Suwannaphum Police Station, received a report of a son assaulting his mother at a house in Ban Nong Chan, Village 7, Champa Khan subdistrict. He attended the scene with Pol Col Phongsak Toylachiwatsas, Superintendent of Suwannaphum Police Station and rescue workers from the Lak Huk Suwannaphum unit.

The house was a single-storey wooden property, locked at the front gate entrance, with villagers standing outside the fence. Inside, officers saw Mr Chaiyanarong, aged 33, sitting on a wooden bench about five metres from the body while holding what appeared to be a gun.

The victim, Mrs Chaluay, aged 57, was found dead on the concrete ground beneath a tree at the front of the house. Her body showed bruising and swelling to the face, with dry blood around the mouth and nose, indicating she had been dead for several hours.

Police and village leaders spent time negotiating with Mr Chaiyanarong before forcing entry by cutting the lock and restraining him using a control pole and equipment. The gun he was holding was later found to be a plastic toy belonging to a child.

During questioning, Mr Chaiyanarong gave a confused statement but admitted punching his mother repeatedly in the face while she was asleep until she became motionless. He said he then remained with the body throughout the night, claiming he was not in control of himself, had not taken medication prescribed by a doctor and had not used methamphetamine, but could not explain his actions.

A neighbour, Mrs Waree, aged 58, told police she walked past the house earlier that morning and heard a voice calling for help. Looking through the fence, she saw Mrs Chaluay lying on her back with blood covering her face, prompting her to alert authorities.

Police conducted a preliminary examination at the scene with an on-duty doctor before being taken for an full post mortem . The investigation is continuing and the case remains under the authority of Suwannaphum Police Station for further legal proceedings.
