An 86-year-old man drove a saloon car into multiple vehicles outside a fresh market in Yasothon city, causing chaos and injuries to two traders. The incident occurred at about 12.10pm on 12 January on Wittayathamrong Road, directly in front of the Yasothon municipal fresh market, prompting vendors to flee for safety as vehicles and motorcycles were struck.

Police said the crash involved a Mitsubishi Lancer, which ploughed into a total of six vehicles. These included two pickup trucks, one saloon car and three motorcycles, all of which sustained damage, while the front of the car driven by the elderly man was wrecked.

According to investigators, the driver, identified as Mr Prapan, aged 86, from Nai Mueang subdistrict in Yasothon district, had just left his nearby home to shop at the market. He told police he attempted to overtake a pickup truck parked ahead but failed to see another saloon car approaching from behind, resulting in a collision.

Mr Prapan said he panicked after the initial impact and accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing his car to surge forward. The vehicle then struck several other vehicles before crossing to the opposite side of the road, where it hit food carts selling grilled sticky rice and fish, as well as three parked motorcycles.

Two market traders, a grilled sticky rice vendor and a fish seller, were injured by the impact. Rescue workers provided first aid at the scene before transporting both injured women to Yasothon Hospital for treatment, while the driver was unhurt and remained at the scene to speak with police.

Police said CCTV footage supports the driver’s account of events. The footage shows the saloon car pulling away slowly from the roadside before attempting to overtake a white pickup truck, at the same moment another white saloon car was also overtaking, leading to the initial crash and the subsequent loss of control.

Matichon reported that investigators from Yasothon City Police Station, led by Pol Capt Nakharin Chantanan, Deputy Inspector (Investigation), are continuing to examine the incident. Officers will review CCTV evidence and witness statements before proceeding with legal action in accordance with the law.
