Construction has begun on two significant bridges, worth over VND32 trillion (US$1.2 billion), to alleviate congestion and bolster transport connections between Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Dong Nai Province. The Cat Lai Bridge and Long Hung Bridge, initiated on January 15, aim to reduce travel time to Long Thanh International Airport and mitigate congestion on existing routes, including the overloaded Cat Lai ferry.

The Cat Lai Bridge will span approximately 11.6 km, featuring an 8-lane structure with a design speed of 80 kph. It will replace the Cat Lai ferry, which has become a bottleneck due to high demand. Meanwhile, the Long Hung Bridge, also known as Dong Nai 2, will stretch about 12 km, enhancing connectivity between National Highway 51 in Dong Nai and Ring Road 3 in HCMC, further integrating the region’s transport network.

Implemented under a public-private partnership, these projects are anticipated to improve regional connectivity. They will link HCMC to Long Thanh Airport and essential facilities like seaports and industrial parks, enhancing Vietnam’s southern economic hub. Officials emphasize that the bridges will cut travel time, reduce logistics costs, and foster competitive growth.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh highlighted the strategic significance of the Cat Lai Bridge. Describing it as a vital transport axis, Chinh emphasized its role in completing the interregional transport network and supporting urban and economic expansion. Authorities called for coordinated efforts between HCMC and Dong Nai in terms of site clearance and resettlement, stressing the importance of construction quality and safety.

Simultaneously, a new 5.2 km riverside road along the Dong Nai River in Tran Bien Ward opened technically. This six-lane urban roadway aims to relieve congestion and is set to catalyze riverside urban and commercial development, contributing further to regional growth, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Two key bridges will enhance connectivity and alleviate congestion between HCMC and Dong Nai.

  • The projects, part of a strategic transport network, reinforce Vietnam's southern economic capabilities.

  • A new riverside road also opened to support urban and commercial expansion.
