What is the best Visa option for 46 year old American to relocate here? Talked to an expat last night he has a 5 year visa ,has to leave every 180 days and he had to show 14,000 USD in a bank account .Is that the best way to go ? Thanks

You are asking about a DTV and would be excellent to cover the next 5 years.

Once you turn 50 can obtain a Non O based on being over 50.

That single entry visa provides a 90 day stamp (permit).

That permit can be extended by 12 months each year.

Edit: btw with DTV you do not have to exit every 180 days.

You can do that or apply for 180 day extension at local immigration.

Many find a trip outside of Thailand better option.
