There was also, at that time, no “Israel” as a country we know to day. There was the Roman Province of Judea. (Named JUDEA because it was where Jews lived as their ancestral homeland). When the Jews of Judea were expelled, the Romans renamed the province as Palestine (and also renamed Jerusalem as Aelia Capotilina) - the aim being that the land had been emptied of Jews. As I was growing up, my parents had three jewish couples for friends. They were American Communists just after the McCarthy era when CPUSA was still a party banned for being a foreign front (it was, Stalinist) and “terrorists”. They were all brilliant people with excellent jobs in science, engineering, academia, finance.

I was young but I understood many of these conversations. My first demonstration, aged four, was to defend the Rosenbergs.

Another hot topic was the Holocaust which was still fresh in everyone’s mind. (In fact, that may be one of the problems with young people. The Holocaust is so distant for them, almost mythical. Some, I’m sure, think anti-Israel is the same as being antisemitic.

One of the topics was why the Jews of Germany, Austria and Poland did not resist. They far outnumbered the SS, Gestapo aso. Was it fear? Any rebellion that was quashed would result in no worse horrors than the camps.

But there was no resistance until the Warsaw Ghetto. The death camps, the labour camps must have been at least a whispered secret. Surely some Jews must have seen the cattle cars.

Were European Jews too civilised to fight back?

My father was the one who made sure to introduce me to Yiddish theatre and was quite pleased when I studied Yiddish.

And so now Israel is fighting in a vastly disproportionate way against what amounts to desert Arabs.

Jews did in fact fight back against Nazi Germany through armed and passive resistance. Several books have been written on this topic.
