An armed suspect was shot dead during an overnight operation by security forces at a rented house in Muang district, Yala province, after a prolonged gunfight that followed failed negotiations for his surrender. The incident prompted a security lockdown of the area as authorities moved to secure the scene and assess wider risks.

The operation began at 00.20 on 20 January 2026, when combined forces from the military, police and local administration moved to enforce the law at a rented two-storey house in Soi Ratsadon Phatthana DD.2, Moo 3, Ban Po Yani, Sateng Nok sub-district. Local community leaders and religious figures were brought in to negotiate, but talks failed and the suspect continued to resist.

At about 03.50, the suspect opened fire on officers, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire that continued into the morning. Security forces returned fire, resulting in the suspect being killed at the scene, while the area remained sealed off to prevent access by unauthorised persons during evidence collection.

On 20 January, Pol Lt Gen Piyawat Chalermsri, Commander of Provincial Police Region 9, visited the site with senior officers to closely monitor the situation. He said the operation was an expansion of a major security case from 11 January, and confirmed that the deceased was wanted under multiple arrest warrants linked to serious security offences.

Authorities identified the deceased as Nasrurolae Samae, aged 37, from Ban Lamda, Moo 3, Yupo sub-district, Muang Yala district. He was subject to four security-related warrants: No. 313/2561, No. 285/2562 for an attack on a village defence checkpoint in which 15 people were killed and for the shooting of a married couple, No. 117/2564, and No. 326/2568 for incitement to violate national security laws.

Police said the suspect was believed to be a leader of an operational unit involved in violent activities in the area, with links to the attack on a petrol station in Thasap on Highway 418 and several ambushes targeting state officials in Muang district. One firearm was seized at the scene and is undergoing forensic examination, while identity verification and network investigations continue.

Daily News reported that Pol Gen Samran Nualma, Deputy National Police Chief and the Fourth Army Region commander ordered heightened security measures across the area. Authorities warned the suspect’s death could prompt retaliatory actions by associated groups, leading to increased checkpoints, patrols and protection of vulnerable targets to reassure the public.
